In this anisotropicplus video I show how a one gallon glass jug filled with water can start a fire when left in full sun on combustible tinder. A five gallon glass carboy filled with water focused the sunlight similar to the one gallon jug, but it was not intense enough to burn paper. An empty one gallon glass jug demonstrated minimal focusing of sunlight with little to no chance of starting a fire. Interestingly the intense focusing of sunlight with the one gallon water filled jug only occurred during two brief time periods. One in the morning and one in the afternoon and no focusing around noon during what most of us would consider the most intense sun part of the day. There is no question that a water filled glass jug is a fire risk in full sun.
