This anisotropicplus video shows in a thermal infrared/visible light side by side video how you can stop a drinking bird heat engine “scientific toy” from drinking by raising the ambient humidity. We get it to restart drinking by lowering the humidity. You will notice at the beginning of the video that the outline of the bird is barely visible because its head is dry. The head must be cool enough to condense the methylene chloride vapor in the head which allows the vapor pressure in the bottom which is still at room temperature to push the methylene chloride up the tube until it tilts, gets another drink and then the seal in the bottom is broken allowing the methylene chloride liquid to run back down to the bottom and the process starts all over again. This will continue as long as the head is wet and the humidity is low enough for effective evaporative cooling on the head to occur. This drinking bird was purchased from PowerTRC via Amazon.
